I’ve taken the time to chat with Jehovah’s witnesses a handful of times. I like talking to them. It seems to me that we have more in common than I do with the average secular person on my block. We’re both reading the bible after all. That seems like a significant starting point.
But after a while I noticed a common thread that runs through most or all of their unorthodox theology. They’ve removed pretty much anything difficult or mysterious about God or man and are ready to hand you a very neat and finely packaged religion that’s been cleaned up for you.
Jesus is God and man? Not anymore. God is three in one? Nah. Eternal suffering in hell? Nope. The human soul or spirit? None of that. Sprinkle in a few extra rules and some eccentric views about the end times and voila!
