I decided to read the Book of Mormon. It makes me think back to when I had the opportunity to visit the Temple Square in Salt Lake City some years ago. I was thumbing through it as a I was talking to a member of the church and I couldn’t help but notice in the introduction it records Joseph Smith saying,
“I told the brethren that the Book of Mormon was the most correct of any book on earth and the keystone of our religion, and a man would get nearer to God by abiding by its precepts, than by any other book.”
I asked the member about this and she seemed to insist that they believed the Book of Mormon and the Bible were held in equal esteem. That seemed odd to me, given that in one sentence, Joseph Smith seemed to triple down on its superiority.
- the most correct
- the keystone to our religion
- nearer to God … than by any other book
Huh. I guess I better keep reading.
