If you open your Bible to the book of Proverbs and start reading, it won’t take long before you notice that one important aspect to biblical wisdom is a certain sort of slowness. A slowness to anger for example, models the very character of God and is commended throughout scripture. The book of Proverbs time after time commends this kind of patience and restraint while rebuking the man who is hasty.
I find this kind of advice to especially jump off the page in the current age because it seems the value of speed is assumed everywhere and is built into the fabric of modernity. Faster is better, right? Instant reaction to the news. Instant tweeting. (X-ting?) Instant approval for a credit card. You can even get access to your paycheck early.
The wisdom of proverbs would suggest that this isn’t all good. It might actually be a fundamental flaw of our modern world.
