The more I read my bible, the more I realize how much of the New Testament is the Old Testament. Even in books that may not directly quote or refer to a specific Old Testament passage, there is almost always an allusion to an OT theme. Consider the following:

  • Depending on how you count, there are probably more references or allusions to the Old Testament in the book of Revelation than there are verses. (404)
  • Psalm 110 by itself is referenced more than 20 times in 11 different New Testament books.
  • The book of Psalms is directly quoted almost 70 times.
  • Paul quotes Isaiah 16 times in the book of Romans.
  • Hebrews refers to Leviticus nearly 20 times.

The list could go on, but I think the point has been made. If all of this strikes you as somewhat surprising, it may be an indication that you don’t know your Old Testament very well.
