After David struck down Goliath and was returning home, 1 Samuel 18 tells us that “the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing” (1 Samuel 18:6) and the refrain they sang was:
“Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands”
Now this is all very well and good but what I find interesting is that this song was known in Gath. In this land of the Philistines. In Goliath’s town this song was known.
And the servants of Achish said to him, “Is not this David the king of the land? Did they not sing to one another of him in dances, ‘Saul has struck down his thousands, and David his ten thousands’?” (1 Samuel 21:11)
I would guess that Philistines heard it on or near the battlefield. It was a victory song after all. I would also guess that it was sung and performed quite loudly. Seems right for a victory song.
