I recently bought a bible for $4.49 plus tax. It was strange moment as I sat there in my chair. I thought about all the meticulous copying and preserving and sacrifice made by so many people over so many years and here I could get my own copy for less than five dollars. God’s words are priceless. And yet it is incredibly cheap to obtain any one instance of them.

Then I began to wonder. What would I be willing to pay for a Bible? What if it still had to be copied by hand and there was far less supply? Would I pay $1,000 for a Bible? $10,000? $100,000? What if it were impossible to own one and I had to go to a library or to a church to read it? Would I go?

I fear that for many believers what Psalm 119 has to say about God’s word is simply foreign. It is not sweeter than honey. (Psalm 119:103) It is not more precious than gold. (Psalm 119:127). Even if we know it, Jesus tells us we have to feed on it to live. It is like food for our souls (Psalm 63:5). I bought a bible for $4.49. I hope I will not let what I paid for it be the final word on what I think it is worth.
