I read the parable of the great banquet in Luke 14 recently and couldn’t help but laugh at its perfect comedic structure. Many were invited to the banquet, but:
- the first person said, “I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it“
- the second person said, “I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to examine them“
- the third person said, “I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come“
No additional explanation needed, I guess. I think Larry David could relate. As he asks in his standup, “Who do you think has more freedom, the married man in America or the single man in communist China?”
