Trusting God is a two-sided coin. When the topic comes up, I usually just hear about one side and for good reason. Preachers and leaders rightly remind us of God’s trustworthiness, of his character, and how he’s always faithful to keep his promises. But there is another side to it. The other side is a healthy self-doubt. This is what best compliments trusting God. (leaning not on your own understanding). The way I see it, when it comes to living life and trusting God, we basically have four options:
| Trust in God | Trust in Yourself |
| No | Yes |
| No | No |
| Yes | Yes |
| Yes | No |
I think a lot of believers embrace the third option, whether intentional or not, but of course this goes against the advice of Proverbs 3:5. The fact of the matter is simply that life is too dynamic and my perspective is too limited to trust in myself as much as I might like to. Better to just turn things over to God and let him make your paths straight.
