As I was exiting a parking lot the other day I noticed a car with a bumper sticker that said, “God is too big to fit into one religion.” The irony was not lost on me. Here’s a person who has surveyed all the religions and concluded that God doesn’t quite fit into any one of them.
It makes me think of the elephant analogy where blind people touch the trunk, another touches the leg, another the tail and they each describe the elephant very differently, much like how supposedly all religions are only able to grasp one part of the divine truth. Of course, in this analogy our bumper sticker friend is the one who is not blind and is able from his perfect perch to explain to us just exactly what an elephant is.
I think the moral of this story is that God is too big to fit into any one religion, but small enough to fit on a bumper sticker.
