The issue of slavery and the Bible is a fairly common objection to Christianity. It used to bother me a little bit and occupy my interest but nowadays I’ve moved on for a couple reasons.

First, in Matthew 19 we find Jesus conceding that the law is not the ideal with regard to marriage. So, from that alone we know that the law as given to Israel was not a perfect ethical guide given for all people at all times.

Secondly, it doesn’t really do much for me for reasons I’ve mentioned in an earlier post regarding God’s so-called atrocities.

Thirdly, the slavery that is permitted in the Bible is very different thing than the transatlantic slave enterprise that many people think of today when they hear slavery.

Gavin Ortlund and Trent Horn have already done an admirable job in engaging in the topic if you are interested in going further down the rabbit hole. If so, I hope you will find it helpful in removing an unnecessary stumbling block.
